Mumbai mega block halts local trains during bridge reconstruction in India

Mumbai will see extensive suburban rail disruptions this weekend as rail authorities carry out planned reconstruction and demolition work across the Central, Trans Harbour and Western lines. The works are intended to replace aged girders and remove an old flyover, but they will result in multiple cancelled and diverted local services and significant changes to normal station stops.

Mumbai mega block timings and affected services

Central Railway has announced a block on the Matunga to Mulund slow lines from 11:05 until 15:55. Services from Thane that normally use the up slow line will be diverted to the up fast line at Mulund during the same period.

On the Trans Harbour line, services between Thane and Vashi/Nerul will be suspended. Down trains from Thane towards Vashi, Nerul and Panvel will not run from 10:35 until 16:07, while up services from Panvel, Nerul and Vashi towards Thane will be suspended from 10:25 until 16:09. Authorities confirmed there will be no block on the Harbour route between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Panvel via Vashi.

Western Railway will impose a 13-hour block between Grant Road and Mumbai Central to facilitate the replacement of a girder on Bridge No.5, a structure dating from the British era that has reached the end of its useful life. Work to demolish the Prabhadevi flyover will also require a 7.5-hour block on the down slow line for removal activities and preparatory works.

The Western block is scheduled to begin late on Saturday night and run into Sunday morning, with specific windows set for the bridge girder replacement. During the block, 145 local services will be cancelled and a further 76 will be partially cancelled. Several trains will be short-terminated or commenced from alternate stations to reduce congestion during the works. For example, 14 up fast services will be short-terminated at Dadar and 62 up slow services will be short-terminated at Bandra with return journeys operating from those stations.

As a result of the Western block, some stations including Mahalaxmi, Prabhadevi, Matunga Road, Lower Parel and Mahim will be skipped by local services for the duration of the works. Commuters who normally board or alight at these stations should plan alternative arrangements.

Railway officials urged passengers to check official notifications, station announcements and mobile applications for the latest timings before travelling. They warned that some services may run late or be diverted to alternate lines and that platform assignments are likely to change at short notice.

While the disruption will inconvenience many daily travellers, the maintenance work aims to improve safety and reliability on Mumbai’s suburban network. Replacing the aged girder on Bridge No.5 and completing the flyover removal at Prabhadevi are essential steps to ensure long-term operational resilience and reduce the risk of unplanned failures.

Commuters are advised to allow extra travel time, consider earlier or later trains where possible, and use authorised feeder services and road transport alternatives if required. Authorities said emergency and passenger assistance teams will be on duty at major stations throughout the block period to help with crowd management and information.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mumbai mega block will affect Central, Trans Harbour and Western suburban services with scheduled diversions and cancellations.
  • Central Railway will block Matunga to Mulund slow lines from 11:05 to 15:55, while Trans Harbour services between Thane and Vashi/Nerul will be suspended during mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
  • Western Railway will impose a 13-hour block between Grant Road and Mumbai Central for reconstruction of Bridge No.5, causing 145 local services to be cancelled and 76 partially cancelled.
  • Commuters should expect station skips and diversions; authorities advise checking official notices and planning alternative travel.
