Mumbai New Year transport arrangements ramp up with extra trains, metro and buses

Mumbai’s transport authorities have announced a suite of special services to ensure safe, reliable travel for commuters on New Year’s Eve as the city prepares to welcome 2026. Western Railway, Central Railway, Mumbai Metro and BEST will all run additional overnight services to accommodate celebrations across the city and its suburbs.

Mumbai New Year transport arrangements and what to expect

The Western Railway will operate eight extra special local trains between Churchgate and Virar on the night of 31 December. Four services will run from Churchgate to Virar and four in the reverse direction, with operations starting shortly after 00:15 and continuing until about 05:00. Western Railway officials said the extra trains aim to handle high passenger volumes and reduce crowding at major stations.

Central Railway will add four special suburban services linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus with Kalyan on the Main Line and with Panvel on the Harbour Line. These trains are scheduled to depart at 01:30 and return with arrivals expected around 03:00 on the Main Line and 02:50 on the Harbour Line. The additional runs are intended to assist late-night travellers returning from central and suburban celebration spots.

Extended metro operations to cover late-night demand

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation will extend operations on Metro Line 3 (the Aqua Line) from 22:30 on 31 December until 05:55 on 1 January. The 33.5 km corridor links Colaba to Aarey JVLR via the Bandra-Kurla Complex and serves 27 stations. Regular metro services are due to resume at 05:55, giving passengers an overnight option that connects central commercial zones with suburban areas.

Buses to link beaches and heritage areas

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will run special buses from 22:00 to 00:30 connecting popular beaches, making it easier for celebrants to reach and depart waterfront gatherings. Heritage tour buses will operate in South Mumbai from 17:30 into the early hours, providing additional capacity for residents and visitors exploring the city’s historic precincts.

Western Railway’s Crime Prevention Officer, Vineet Abhishek, told ANI that extra staff from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) will be deployed alongside additional ticket-checking personnel to keep operations smooth and secure. “A lot of our commuters will be travelling to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Keeping that in mind, Western Railway will be running some extra special trains throughout the night,” he said.

Authorities have urged commuters to plan journeys in advance, allow extra time for travel, and follow official announcements on platform changes or service updates. Travellers are advised to keep personal belongings secure and to use staffed booking counters or official apps for ticketing where possible.

With enhanced services across rail, metro and bus networks, Mumbai aims to provide safe, reliable transport options as crowds converge on celebration venues. The coordinated approach between suburban railways, the metro and BEST seeks to reduce congestion, improve passenger flow and support a safer New Year’s experience for the city’s millions of residents and visitors.
