The Oguta Community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State held a civic reception on Friday to honour its son, Mr Sylvester Nwakuche, following his appointment as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). The event, staged at the Oguta Lake Waterfront, celebrated Nwakuche’s leadership and his contributions to local development, particularly youth employment.
Sylvester Nwakuche reiterates service and gratitude
In remarks at the ceremony, Mr Nwakuche thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and acknowledged the mentorship of the Interior Minister, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. He also praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for his leadership in Imo State. Nwakuche said the appointment reflected the values of integrity and hard work nurtured by his community.
“My appointment is a proof of what is possible when a community nurtures integrity and hard work,” he told residents. He noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda had yet to yield the full benefits he expects for the Correctional Service, signalling a focus on continued reform and improvement within the agency.
Community impact and appeals to youth
Local leaders used the occasion to highlight the wider impact of Nwakuche’s work. The President-General of the Oguta Community Development Union, Mr Faith Iwuorisha, said the NCoS chief had played a direct role in reducing youth frustration and social vices by supporting employment opportunities in the area.
Addressing young people, Sylvester Nwakuche urged discipline, patience and integrity. He appealed for peace in Oguta and called on youths to remain focused on lawful opportunities. The message was reinforced by the Chairman of Oguta LGA, Mr Ifeanyi Nnani, who congratulated Nwakuche and pledged the local government’s readiness to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Cultural celebration and recognition
The civic reception combined official ceremony with cultural celebration. Organisers chose the theme Honour, Service and Cultural Heritage and presented a certificate and plaque to Mr Nwakuche. The programme included a boat regatta, kayak races on Oguta Lake, masquerade displays and other cultural performances that drew serving and retired controllers, traditional rulers and members of the clergy.
Speakers emphasised Oguta’s contributions to national life, citing sons and daughters of the community who have served in public roles. The local chairman said peace and community cohesion were essential for sustainable development and called for continued collaboration between local and national leaders.
By centring the event on both recognition and community development, organisers sought to link public service to tangible benefits for residents. The emphasis on youth employment and social stability suggests local stakeholders see Nwakuche’s leadership as an opportunity to strengthen social programmes and reduce criminality and unrest.
The reception provided a public platform for the new Controller-General to set expectations for his tenure, thank those who supported his rise and to reaffirm his commitment to serving both his local community and the nation.
