Nitish Kumar assets show Indian CM holds less wealth than several ministers

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared movable and immovable assets totalling Rs 1.65 crore in the latest asset disclosure uploaded to the state government website, a modest rise of around Rs 68,455 from a year earlier. The public filing, published on the Cabinet Secretariat Department’s portal, provides a line-by-line account of the chief minister’s holdings and those of his cabinet colleagues.

Nitish Kumar assets and what the disclosure shows

According to the declaration, Mr Kumar holds movable property valued at roughly Rs 17.66 lakh and immovable property worth about Rs 1.48 crore. His liquid holdings are minimal, with Rs 20,552 in cash and nearly Rs 57,800 spread across various bank accounts. The chief minister owns a single residential flat at a cooperative housing society in Dwarka, New Delhi, and a car valued at Rs 11.32 lakh. The disclosure also records an unusual entry for an urban politician: the CM is listed as owning 10 cows and 13 calves.

The state government makes the annual declaration mandatory for all cabinet ministers, insisting that assets and liabilities be disclosed on the last day of every calendar year. The measure aims to promote transparency and let citizens compare the financial profiles of top officials. In this year’s filing, several ministers appear to hold greater wealth than the chief minister.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s declaration shows cash holdings of Rs 1.35 lakh and additional cash of Rs 35,000 in his wife’s name, while his immovable assets, including non-agricultural land, total Rs 4.91 crore. Mr Choudhary has also declared a rifle valued at Rs 4 lakh. Another deputy chief minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, lists immovable property worth Rs 48.46 lakh and owns a revolver valued at Rs 77,181.

Other cabinet members who submitted their statements include Mangal Pandey (Health), Vijay Kumar Choudhary (Parliamentary Affairs), Leshi Singh (Food and Consumer Protection), Zama Khan (Minority Welfare), Madan Sahni (Social Welfare), Dilip Jaiswal and Ashok Choudhary. The disclosures vary widely, reflecting different personal circumstances and asset classes among ministers.

Comparative readings make clear that Kumar ranks below several colleagues in declared wealth. In 2024, the chief minister’s combined movable and immovable assets were reported at around Rs 1.64 crore, so the latest filing shows only a marginal increase year-on-year. The contrast with ministers who hold multiple properties or larger land parcels may attract public and political attention as debates on governance and accountability continue.

Officials say the annual disclosure is designed to reduce opacity in public life and to deter corruption by making officials’ economic positions a matter of public record. Critics argue that declarations are limited in scope because they do not always capture liabilities, trusts or assets held indirectly. Supporters counter that the process nevertheless provides an important reference point and allows media and civil society to scrutinise changes over time.

The updated statements remain available on the Bihar government’s website for citizens and journalists who wish to review the full schedules and annexures. The disclosure offers a snapshot of the financial standing of Bihar’s political leadership at the end of the calendar year and is likely to feature in local reporting and analysis ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nitish Kumar assets declared at Rs 1.65 crore in the latest Bihar government disclosure.
  • The CM’s movable assets are about Rs 17.66 lakh and immovable assets Rs 1.48 crore, with one Dwarka flat in New Delhi.
  • Several ministers, including Deputy CMs, reported higher holdings such as Samrat Choudhary’s immovable assets of Rs 4.91 crore.
  • The disclosure highlights transparency measures and offers a clear snapshot of officials’ declared wealth.
