Government authorities in Odisha have announced a state-wide initiative to mark National Youth Day on 12 January, directing every educational institution to organise a collective rendition of Vande Mataram and a joint recitation of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Swadeshi Sankalp, the state’s indigenous self-reliance pledge.

Odisha Vande Mataram initiative mobilises schools

The Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department has issued instructions to all district collectors to ensure a smooth and uniform observance of the programme. To support implementation, the state has divided districts into five zones—Jeypore, Berhampur, Balasore, Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar—where zonal-level training programmes are under way.

Officials say the training sessions are intended to familiarise teachers and student leaders with the choreography and order of events, so the rendition and pledge can proceed in a coordinated manner across urban and rural schools alike. The Bhubaneswar zonal training was held at Utkal University and drew attendance from Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who officiated as the chief guest.

According to state officials, the move aims to foster a sense of patriotism, cultural pride and self-reliance among students through a large-scale collective observance on National Youth Day. The programme will see students across age groups reciting the Atmanirbhar Bharat Swadeshi Sankalp and joining in a unified singing of Vande Mataram.

Organisers note that the training programme model was chosen to promote consistency in delivery and to ensure that the pledge’s principles are explained alongside the recitation. School administrators will be provided with materials and guidance on how to conduct the sessions in a way that respects local schedules and curricular demands.

Education experts contacted for comment said such initiatives can strengthen civic awareness when implemented sensitively. They cautioned that schools should frame the pledge as part of broader civic education, emphasising practical examples of self-reliance such as supporting local industry and skills development.

The state’s decision follows a trend among several Indian states to mark National Youth Day with programmes that combine cultural expression and civic messaging. While some observers welcome the emphasis on national pride and indigenous enterprise, others have called for clear guidance to ensure these events remain inclusive and educational.

Officials in Odisha have stressed that participation is to be organised through existing school leadership channels and that the zonal trainings will equip teachers to handle questions and manage the ceremonies in a dignified manner. The objective, they said, is not only a symbolic show of unity but also an opportunity to introduce students to concepts such as local manufacturing, entrepreneurship and community service.

As schools prepare for 12 January, the state government is balancing logistical planning with messages of cultural heritage and practical self-reliance. The zonal training schedule and supplementary materials will be distributed to district education officers in the coming days, ahead of the statewide observance.
