The Ogun State Government has cancelled the unveiling of the Laderin Prof. Wole Soyinka Train Station and the Sagamu–Ayepe Road that had been scheduled for Saturday, 3 January 2026. The cancellation was communicated in an official notice issued on Friday after invitations had already been circulated.
According to the initial invitation signed on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Governor Dapo Abiodun was due to commission the train station at 10:30am in Laderin, Abeokuta, and then proceed to commission the Sagamu–Ayepe Road at 2:00pm in Sagamu Local Government Area. In a subsequent notice the government stated that the programme had been cancelled and that a new date would be announced later.
The notice read in part: “This is to formally inform the general public that the commissioning of the Laderin Prof. Wole Soyinka Train Station and the Sagamu–Ayepe Road, earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, 3rd January, 2026, has been cancelled.” It added that the inconvenience caused was regretted and thanked the public for their understanding and support. The government did not disclose the reason for the postponement.
Laderin Wole Soyinka Train Station and access road
The Laderin Wole Soyinka Train Station is a key element of transport infrastructure linking Abeokuta to Lagos via the Lagos–Ibadan rail corridor. Its commissioning had attracted attention because it is expected to improve commuter links and ease road congestion between Ogun State and the commercial hub of Lagos.
Local authorities have also emphasised the importance of the Sagamu–Ayepe Road to intra-city mobility and economic activity across Sagamu and neighbouring communities. The road that provides access to the train station has been the subject of public concern in recent years, with residents complaining about its poor condition and the impact on trade and daily life.
Rehabilitation work on the Laderin–Olokuta Road, the main access route to the Wole Soyinka Train Station in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, began in 2024 following sustained public outcry. The route serves more than 40 communities and had been in a dilapidated state for over two years, prompting protests by residents who said the condition had hindered socio-economic activity in the area.
Residents had repeatedly urged the state government to address the road before the station opened. The cancellation of the commissioning will be a disappointment for communities expecting immediate relief, but the government has assured the public that a new date will be communicated in due course and that work on access roads remains a priority.
For commuters and traders who rely on improved transport links, the delay means continued uncertainty about when services and improved road conditions will become fully available. Officials say the postponement does not change the status of the rehabilitation works, and they have reiterated their commitment to completing necessary upgrades to ensure safe and reliable access to the rail corridor.
Observers say the eventual commissioning will be an important step for regional connectivity and economic activity, but residents and users will be watching closely for the new date and for visible progress on the access roads that link the station to surrounding communities.
