P.S. Sukumaran, a respected cartoonist and longstanding figure in Kerala’s cultural and civic life, died at his home at Jos Junction on Friday. He was 92. A familiar presence in Ernakulam’s arts community, Mr Sukumaran combined a career in cartooning with active leadership in local organisations.

P.S. Sukumaran obituary

Mr Sukumaran’s cartoons reached readers beyond the state. An alumnus of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, he contributed to several publications during his career, including the renowned Shankar’s Weekly in Delhi, a periodical that helped shape modern cartooning in India. His work was known for its clarity of line and an observant eye for social detail.

Beyond his artistic output, Mr Sukumaran played a prominent role in supporting Kerala’s arts infrastructure. He served as both secretary and president of the Kerala Fine Arts Society in Ernakulam, a local institution that organises exhibitions, performances and events to promote visual and performing arts. Colleagues recall his commitment to nurturing young talent and to preserving the society’s role as a community hub.

Mr Sukumaran also held leadership positions in civic organisations. He was president of the Rotary Club of Cochin, where he took part in community service initiatives, and led the All Kerala Contract Carriage Operators Association, representing the interests of transport operators. Those roles reflected a career that bridged creative work and public engagement.

Cremation was held at the Ravipuram crematorium on Friday evening. Family members organised the final rites close to his home. Details of surviving family have not been widely publicised.

Mr Sukumaran’s generation of cartoonists worked in a period when print media played a central role in public life. Publications such as Shankar’s Weekly provided a national platform for artists who used humour and satire to comment on politics and society. While Mr Sukumaran’s oeuvre is not comprehensively archived online, his contributions formed part of Kerala’s broader cultural record and local memory.

Former associates and members of the arts society and Rotary Club described him as approachable and attentive to civic matters. His leadership in the Fine Arts Society was noted for energetic event programming and efforts to connect artists with audiences. In his positions with the contract carriage association, he engaged with practical concerns affecting drivers and operators across the state.

As Kerala’s cultural scene evolves, the passing of figures such as Mr Sukumaran marks the end of an era in which artists frequently combined creative work with direct involvement in community organisations. His death prompted reflections on the role of cartoonists in public discourse and the ways local institutions sustain artistic practice.

Further information about memorials or tributes organised by the Kerala Fine Arts Society or other groups may be provided by those organisations in due course. For now, friends and members of the cultural community in Ernakulam remember P.S. Sukumaran for his artistic contributions and long record of civic service.
