The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has activated its Hospital Information System at the PGI Satellite Centre in Sangrur, effective 1 January 2026. The move forms part of PGI’s wider digital drive to modernise hospital services and improve patient experience across its facilities.
PGI Hospital Information System strengthens Sangrur services
In the first phase, essential operational modules—patient registration, billing and admission–discharge–transfer—have been made operational and are now in routine use. PGI officials said these modules will streamline front-line workflows, reduce paperwork and help staff manage patient flows more efficiently.
“The successful rollout of HIS at Sangrur reflects PGI’s focused approach towards comprehensive digitisation of hospital services,” said Prof Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER. “The system has been designed to enhance efficiency, transparency and patient convenience. We will strengthen this digital framework and replicate it at PGI Chandigarh to ensure uniform, seamless and patient-centred service delivery across all PGI facilities.”
Additional components, including a doctor’s desk interface, laboratory services and stores and inventory management, are in advanced stages of training and trial runs. PGI expects these modules to be rolled out shortly, completing an integrated digital workflow that connects administrative and clinical functions.
Pankaj Rai, Deputy Director (Administration) at PGI, said the institute met a clear timeline to operationalise the system from the start of the year. “A clear timeline had been set to operationalise the HIS at Sangrur from January 1, 2026, and the target was achieved through close coordination and sustained efforts of all teams concerned,” he said.
The Hospital Information System was developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Noida, as part of PGI’s broader digital transformation roadmap. The Sangrur Satellite Centre, a 350-bedded hospital, is among the early adopters of this system. According to PGI, the technology aims to improve real-time data access, support clinical decision-making and strengthen overall quality of care.
Administrators highlighted practical benefits that patients and staff should notice soon. Faster registration and billing processes are expected to cut waiting times. Digitised admission and discharge records will improve bed management and reduce administrative delays. When laboratory and pharmacy systems are integrated, clinicians will be able to access results and inventory information more quickly, enabling timely treatment decisions.
PGI also emphasised training and change management as critical to the initiative’s success. Staff training programmes and supervised trial runs have been conducted to familiarise users with the new interfaces and workflows. The institute said it will continue to monitor system performance and user feedback during the phased roll-out.
By deploying the PGI Hospital Information System at an affiliated satellite centre, PGI aims to create a template for digital health implementation that can be scaled across its network. Officials said the experience in Sangrur will inform the roll-out at PGI Chandigarh and support future expansions within the region’s public healthcare system.
Overall, the Sangrur HIS commissioning represents a practical step towards modernising public hospital administration and improving patient-centred services through technology. PGI said it remains committed to leveraging digital tools to strengthen public healthcare delivery and support better outcomes for patients.
Key Takeaways:
- PGI operationalised the PGI Hospital Information System at its Sangrur Satellite Centre from 1 January 2026 to improve efficiency and patient convenience.
- Initial modules—patient registration, billing and admission–discharge–transfer—are live; clinical, laboratory and inventory modules will follow after training and trials.
- The system, developed by C-DAC Noida for the 350-bedded Sangrur centre, will be replicated at PGI Chandigarh to ensure uniform digital services.
