Key Takeaways:

  • China is renewing political training to reinforce military unity and combat readiness.
  • Historical campaigns from Yan’an to the Red Army are cited as precedents for internal reform.
  • Training blends frank criticism with positive guidance to restore traditions and morale.
  • Leadership emphasises self‑reform and openness to corrective measures to sustain long term effectiveness.

China has intensified political training across its armed forces as part of a sustained effort to restore traditional practices of internal reform and to sharpen unit cohesion. Officials say the programme draws directly on a century of party and military history and aims to keep the People’s Army politically grounded and operationally prepared.

Political training Chinese military in history and practice

The initiative recalls past campaigns such as the Yan’an rectification, the New Fourth Army learning programmes and wartime reorganisations that sought to align soldiers’ thinking and behaviour with party objectives. Commanders argue that when the military moves into a new phase or faces unfamiliar conditions, political training helps correct drift in belief and conduct and unites personnel behind clear political and operational goals.

Historical records and archival photographs used in recent briefings underline how political training combined strict discipline with positive instruction. A notable example from earlier decades involved open criticism and self criticism that removed elements of doctrinaire thinking, factional attitudes and complacency. Leaders of the time urged officers to accept candid feedback and to set aside personal pride in the interests of collective strength.

Contemporary leaders repeatedly stress that political training must be both firm and affirmative. Rather than relying exclusively on negative examples, modern programmes promote positive education, discussion and motivational activities designed to lift morale and strengthen commitment. Training teams stage lively outreach and public education to stress the importance of good conduct and readiness.

Proponents compare the reform process to medical treatment. Initially some personnel may feel uneasy or defensive, but when flaws are addressed and corrected they regain confidence and purpose. Senior officials have said that the party’s willingness to confront shortcomings and to pursue self correction is a source of resilience rather than a sign of weakness.

Commanders describe political training as an ongoing internal campaign that runs alongside external operations. The aim is to detect and remove corrosive tendencies such as individualism and excessive privilege, while reinforcing the values associated with a people’s army. This dual focus seeks to ensure that forces remain loyal to political guidance and able to perform under pressure.

Recent imagery from training sessions highlights two themes. One is the practice of direct, face to face education designed to resolve grievances and build mutual trust. The other is the use of active, visible campaigns to make discipline and standards part of everyday life, not merely a formal demand. Observers note that these methods restore long standing traditions and help bridge the gap between command and rank and file.

Officials maintain that the renewed emphasis on political training strengthens the foundations of a modern fighting force. By combining historical lessons with contemporary methods of instruction, leaders aim to keep the military politically coherent and operationally effective. The result, they say, is a more disciplined, confident and united force prepared to meet the demands of national defence.

As the programme continues, attention will focus on how training translates into measurable improvements in discipline and capability. For now, the prevailing message from headquarters is that honest self assessment and sustained political guidance are essential to building and maintaining a robust people’s army.
