The Federal Highway Police (Polícia Rodoviária Federal, PRF) reported a marked improvement in road safety during Operation Natal 2025 on federal highways across the state of Paraná. Conducted between Tuesday 23 December and Sunday 28 December, the operation recorded 127 accidents, 138 people injured and seven fatalities.
PRF Operation Natal Paraná shows fewer fatalities
Compared with the equivalent operation in 2024, which recorded 15 deaths, the 2025 figure represents a 53% reduction in fatalities — eight lives saved on the state’s federal roads. While the number of accidents fell slightly from 142 to 127, the number of injured rose from 121 to 138.
Most incidents occurred on high-traffic days, particularly Wednesday and Sunday. The most common types of accidents were run-off-road collisions, impacts with fixed objects, rear-end collisions and rollovers. The PRF said the primary causes were delayed or absent driver reactions, lack of safe following distances, alcohol consumption, speeds inappropriate for the road and poor road or vehicle conditions.
All seven fatal accidents took place on dry roads. Straight stretches accounted for the majority of deadly incidents (57.1%), with curves responsible for 28.6% and intersections for 14.3%. The fatal collisions included run-off-road events, rear, side and transversal impacts and a pedestrian run-over. Fatal incidents occurred across the morning, afternoon and early evening periods.
Enforcement activity was intensive. Officers issued 4,244 traffic fines during the operation. The principal infractions were speeding — more than 1,400 tickets — followed by 435 cases of unlicenced vehicles, 280 illegal overtakes, 244 failures to wear seat belts, 123 vehicles deemed in poor condition and 60 fines for incorrect child restraint use.
The PRF attributed the drop in deaths to the combined effect of targeted enforcement and educational initiatives deployed for the holiday period. The force said it will continue to step up both policing and public-awareness efforts to sustain safer travel on federal routes.
Road safety experts note that enforcement can reduce the most severe outcomes even when accident rates remain broadly stable. By focusing on the behaviours that most frequently lead to fatal collisions — speeding, drink-driving and unsafe overtaking — authorities can lower the incidence of the worst outcomes.
PRF commanders emphasised that drivers must remain vigilant and adopt defensive driving practices, especially on stretches with high traffic volumes. They also urged vehicle owners to ensure that their cars are roadworthy and that safety systems such as seat belts and child restraints are used correctly.
Operation Natal 2025 shows that combined enforcement and awareness campaigns can deliver measurable benefits in road safety. The PRF said it will maintain heightened operations during future high-movement periods to protect lives on Paraná’s federal highways.
