Reddikere Bund on Guluru Road Poses Risk to Locals in India

A village bridge known locally as the Reddikere bund on the Guluru road, on the outskirts of Bagepalli town, is attracting growing concern from residents and commuters after years of exposure without protective barriers. The bund, which serves as a vital link from Bagepalli towards Guluru, Marganukunte, Timmampalli and Billuru and provides connections to Andhra Pradesh districts such as Kadiri, Kadapa and Pulivendula, carries a steady flow of traffic every day.

India road safety concerns at Reddikere bund

Two-wheelers, cars, tempos and lorries regularly traverse the narrow turn at the bund. The road curves sharply around one side of a pond while the opposite side drops into deeper ravines where farmers cultivate rice and coarse millet. Despite the clear hazard, the bund lacks any permanent parapet, railing or protective kerb. Villagers say only a few flimsy rods mark the edge, doing little to prevent vehicles from running off the road.

Local residents recount frightening incidents. According to E. Venkatareddy of Potepalli village, a motorcyclist and a tempo transporting poultry previously skidded off the bund, falling into the pond. Those episodes, they say, underline how quickly a routine commute can turn into a life-threatening event when there are no safety measures in place.

Schoolchildren, villagers and daily commuters use this route on school buses, public transport, tractors and auto-rickshaws. Although authorities have erected a warning sign indicating the bend, residents stress that signage alone is not sufficient. They argue that after recent road reconstruction work, the obvious next step is to provide two-sided protective parapets along the bund to prevent vehicles from slipping into the water or ravine.

“We travel this road every day. It is only a matter of time before there is a fatal accident,” a resident said. Villagers also pointed out that the lack of guardrails endangers farmers working near the drop-offs and increases potential losses to both life and property.

Road safety experts recommend relatively low-cost solutions that local authorities can implement quickly. These include installing sturdy guardrails or concrete kerbs along both sides of the bund, improving surface friction on the turn, adding reflective markers and speed-reduction measures, and conducting routine inspections to ensure temporary protections are not removed.

Residents are calling on the municipal and district road authorities to treat the bund as a priority. They want officials to inspect the site, consult with local users, and allocate funds for immediate protective works. Several villagers also asked for better enforcement of speed limits and occasional patrols to deter reckless driving at the bend.

Until structural measures are in place, commuters will continue to face heightened risk on this busy inter-district route. The Reddikere bund case highlights how local infrastructure gaps can put ordinary travellers at danger and why timely maintenance and safety installations must follow road upgrades.

If authorities respond promptly, the community hopes that simple engineering steps will prevent further accidents and ensure safer daily journeys for schoolchildren, farmers and other residents who depend on this road.

Key Takeaways:

  • India road safety concerns at Reddikere bund on the Guluru route due to missing guardrails.
  • Daily traffic including school buses, two-wheelers and goods vehicles use the turn, increasing accident risk.
  • Villagers report previous crashes and urge authorities to install barriers after road reconstruction.
  • Residents call for prompt action to protect commuters and farm workers on this interdistrict route.
