Russia US relations make cautious progress, says Moscow

Russia’s foreign ministry has said that the process of normalising relations with the United States is underway but far from straightforward, signalling cautious optimism from Moscow while stressing a firm approach grounded in national interests.

Russia US relations show cautious progress despite difficulties

On Thursday, Maria Zakharova, the official spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, told reporters that bilateral dialogue with Washington is continuing even though the path to normalisation is not easy. She described Russia’s stance as resolute and pragmatic, rooted in the protection of national interests and respect for longstanding traditions.

“The process of normalising relations between Russia and the United States is proceeding, of course, not easily,” Zakharova said. She added that Moscow’s firm position, combined with a willingness to engage in pragmatic talks, represents the only viable course of action from the Russian perspective.

Zakharova noted that this posture has found resonance with elements of the current U.S. administration. She recalled that when the team of U.S. President Trump proposed restoring bilateral dialogue without preconditions, Russia welcomed the initiative and proceeded to support the resumption of talks. “That proposal was supported on the Russian side, and the process continues,” she said.

The comment comes amid a backdrop of prolonged tensions and periodic disputes that have strained the bilateral relationship in recent years. While Zakharova did not outline concrete steps or a timetable for further rapprochement, her remarks underscore a mutual interest in maintaining channels of communication.

Analysts say that sustained diplomatic engagement, even if cautious, can help manage areas of disagreement and reduce the risk of escalation. The resumption of dialogue may provide avenues to address a range of issues, from strategic arms discussions to regional crises, although no specific negotiations were detailed in the spokeswoman’s briefing.

Moscow’s emphasis on a balance between firmness and pragmatism reflects a desire to safeguard national priorities while keeping diplomatic options open. That posture, according to Zakharova, is the reason Russia responded positively when faced with a U.S. offer to restart talks without preconditions.

Observers caution that a willingness to talk is not the same as an immediate thaw in relations. Longstanding disputes, sanctions regimes and differing positions in regional conflicts continue to complicate the bilateral agenda. Nevertheless, officials on both sides appear to value the utility of direct communication as a tool to prevent misunderstandings and to explore areas of potential cooperation.

For now, the message from Moscow is measured: normalisation is progressing, but the process will be complex and contingent on the defence of Russian national interests. As the diplomatic exchanges continue, both capitals will be watched closely for any signs of concrete agreements or a broader shift in the tenor of their relationship.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s briefing, carried by Interfax, did not offer additional detail on planned meetings or follow-up steps. It did, however, underline that the two sides have opted for dialogue—a pragmatic step that keeps channels open in an often tense international environment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Moscow says the process of normalisation with Washington is under way but remains challenging.
  • Russia emphasises a firm, interest-based approach combined with readiness for pragmatic dialogue.
  • Russia US relations have advanced after a U.S. proposal to restore bilateral talks without preconditions, which Russia accepted.
  • The dialogue’s continuation may affect wider diplomatic dynamics between the two powers.
