Key Takeaways:

  • Russia exported more than 2,000 tonnes of sparkling wine worth over $3.3m from January to November, up 30% by volume and 41% by value.
  • Kazakhstan (28%) and China (27%) were the top buyers, with record shipments to China exceeding 600 tonnes.
  • Average price rose about 10%, with the litre costing roughly 565 rubles and highest prices recorded in the Far East.
  • Russian sparkling wine exports point to growing regional demand and opportunities for producers to expand market presence.

Russian Sparkling Wine Exports Surge as Kazakhstan and China Lead Purchases

Russia has accelerated its shipments of sparkling wines to foreign markets, sending more than 2,000 tonnes valued at over $3.3 million between January and November, official data compiled by Agroexport show. That compares with roughly 1,600 tonnes worth more than $2.3 million in the same period last year, representing a 30 percent rise in volume and a 41 percent increase in value.

Russian sparkling wine exports reach new regional heights

The list of leading importers was headed by Kazakhstan and China, which together accounted for more than half of exports. Kazakhstan took 28 percent of shipments while China received 27 percent. Other notable destinations were Belarus with 17 percent, Kyrgyzstan with 6 percent and Abkhazia with 5 percent.

China recorded a historic high in purchases from Russia over the January to November period, importing more than 600 tonnes of sparkling wine, nearly $900,000 in value. The growth in shipments to China and neighbouring states underlines expanding regional demand for Russian producers.

Industry observers say the figures reflect a combination of factors. Geographic proximity and established trade links make Kazakhstan and Belarus natural outlets. Meanwhile, rising Chinese demand for imported alcoholic beverages and targeted Russian trade efforts have helped drive the recent gains.

Price trends and market implications

Average prices for Russian sparkling wine also increased over the past year. By late November the average cost per litre rose by about 10 percent to roughly 565 rubles. Regional variations persisted, with the highest average prices recorded in the Russian Far East.

Higher average prices contributed to the faster growth in export value compared with shipment volume. That suggests that producers are managing to sell more premium products or that market mix has shifted towards higher-priced offerings.

Outlook for growers and exporters

For producers, the trend presents both opportunities and challenges. Increased demand from BRICS+ partners and neighbouring states offers a clearer route for exporters seeking to diversify markets. At the same time, firms will need to focus on brand development, quality assurance and logistics to maintain momentum in competitive markets.

Trade specialists note that sustained growth will depend on continued access to these regional markets and on the ability of Russian wineries to meet buyer expectations in terms of consistency and quality. Investments in packaging, marketing and distribution networks could further raise export values.

In the short term, the rise in shipments and value is a positive indicator for the sector. It shows that Russian sparkling wine exports are finding stronger traction across neighbouring states and in China, a trend that could underpin further export growth into broader Asian markets.

Looking ahead, exporters and policymakers will monitor whether the momentum continues through year-end and into the next year, and whether producers can capitalise on the rising interest without eroding margins through discounting.
