São Paulo Metro to Run 24 Hours for New Year with Contactless Payments

São Paulo’s metro system will operate continuously through the New Year’s Eve celebrations, the operator announced, providing 24‑hour service to cope with the expected surge of passengers on Avenida Paulista. The move is aimed at improving mobility and easing crowds for those attending festivities in the city centre.

São Paulo metro 24 hours and contactless payment rollout

The operator said travellers heading to Avenida Paulista will be able to use contactless payment directly at the turnstiles with debit or credit cards. The feature is already active at Brigadeiro, Trianon‑Masp and Consolação stations on Line 2‑Green, and it also works on Lines 1‑Blue and 3‑Red.

Metrô confirmed that the remaining stations on Line 2‑Green, together with stations on Line 15‑Silver, will receive the contactless system gradually over the coming weeks. The staggered rollout is intended to allow staff to complete installations and provide user guidance where necessary.

In addition to the metro’s extended hours, Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) and private rail operators announced they will adopt special operating plans for the turn of the year. While exact timetables may vary by line, the coordinated measures aim to ensure continuity of service and to manage peaks of passenger demand around major event sites.

Commuters are advised to plan ahead. Operators recommend checking official websites and social media channels for the latest timetable updates, station opening information and any temporary changes to service patterns. Given the higher passenger volumes typically seen during New Year celebrations, users should allow extra travel time and expect queues at key access points.

The contactless option simplifies boarding for occasional riders and visitors who may not carry an electronic ticket. Using a contactless debit or credit card at the turnstile eliminates the need to purchase a separate ticket for single journeys, streamlining entry at busy stations. Passengers should ensure their card supports contactless payments and that any mobile wallet or banking app is set up in advance if they prefer to use a smartphone.

Transport officials say the measures are part of broader efforts to modernise fare collection and respond to changing passenger needs. Gradual adoption across additional stations will allow teams to monitor performance and address any teething issues before the system becomes universally available.

For visitors travelling to Avenida Paulista for the celebrations, the combined approach of 24‑hour metro operation and expanded payment options is likely to reduce pressure on alternative transport modes and improve access during a very busy period. Passengers should keep an eye on official updates and consider travelling outside peak festive moments where possible to avoid congestion.

Further information, including exact station lists fitted with contactless technology and any special service maps or advisories for New Year’s Eve, will be published by Metrô, CPTM and private operators ahead of the celebrations.

Key Takeaways:

  • São Paulo metro will operate 24 hours during New Year’s Eve to serve crowds on Avenida Paulista.
  • Contactless payments via debit and credit cards are now accepted at key stations on Line 2‑Green and on Lines 1‑Blue and 3‑Red.
  • Remaining Line 2‑Green stations and Line 15‑Silver will receive the system in the coming weeks.
  • CPTM and private rail operators will run special services—passengers are advised to check schedules and expect higher demand.
