The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds affecting parts of Selangor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. The advisory remains in force until noon on Friday, with forecasters urging residents and commuters to expect sudden downpours and possible disruptions.

Malaysia thunderstorm warning — What to expect

MetMalaysia said the most intense activity is likely over Bentong in Pahang and multiple districts in Selangor, including Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang. Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are also listed as areas at risk. A separate warning covers parts of Negeri Sembilan, namely Jelebu, Seremban and Port Dickson.

The department noted that it issues a thunderstorm warning when there are signs that rainfall intensity could exceed 20mm per hour and that heavy downpours are either imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour. Each thunderstorm advisory is a short-term alert and is valid for up to six hours for any single release.

Residents in the affected areas should be prepared for sudden changes in conditions. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and make roads hazardous, while strong gusts may bring down tree branches and affect light structures. Localised flash floods remain a risk in low-lying locations and areas with poor drainage.

Transport operators and commuters should anticipate delays. Motorists are advised to reduce speed, switch on headlights in heavy rain and avoid driving through flooded stretches. Those using public transport should check service updates as interruptions are possible during peak storm activity.

Local authorities may issue further advisories if conditions deteriorate. People living near rivers or on flood plains should monitor official channels and be ready to move to higher ground if instructed. Simple preparedness measures such as securing loose outdoor items, clearing drains where safe to do so and keeping emergency contact numbers handy can reduce impacts.

MetMalaysia continues to monitor weather systems and will update warnings as new observations and radar data become available. The department’s criteria for a thunderstorm warning focus on rapidly intensifying convective activity that can produce concentrated, high-intensity rainfall in short periods.

While the warning does not indicate prolonged statewide flooding, the concentrated nature of thunderstorms means impacts can be severe but short-lived. Residents are advised to follow official updates and heed guidance from local authorities until the advisory is lifted.

For the latest information, check MetMalaysia’s official channels and local emergency services. Taking precautionary steps now can help reduce risk and keep communities safe as the severe weather moves through the affected regions.

Key Takeaways:

  • MetMalaysia issues a Malaysia thunderstorm warning covering Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan.
  • Heavy rain, strong winds and intense thunderstorms expected until noon on Friday, raising localised flood and disruption risks.
  • Specific districts affected include Bentong, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Sepang and parts of Negeri Sembilan.
