Sreekumar G. Pillai has taken charge as the director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) at Kalpakkam, New Delhi announced. The appointment follows the retirement of former director C. G. Karhadkar and marks a continuation of seasoned technical leadership at one of India’s premier nuclear research institutions.

IGCAR Director India Background and career

Pillai, a native of Kerala, graduated with a BTech in chemical engineering from the University of Calicut. He joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1990 and has served in the nuclear sector for more than 35 years. His long career spans operational and managerial roles across reactor operations, fuel cycle management and process engineering.

Before his appointment at Kalpakkam, Pillai served as Deputy Chief Executive of the Nuclear Recycle Board at BARC, Mumbai. His hands-on experience includes shift charge engineer, senior process engineer and superintendent of operations at the Trombay plutonium plant, roles that provided deep exposure to plant operations, safety protocols and back-end fuel cycle processes.

IGCAR plays a central role in India’s fast breeder reactor programme and research into closed fuel cycle technologies. Pillai’s expertise in nuclear recycling and plutonium handling aligns with the centre’s mandate to advance reactor technology and fuel-cycle innovation. Observers say the selection emphasises continuity in technical competence and operational experience.

As director, Pillai will oversee research programmes, facility operations and collaborative projects at Kalpakkam. His responsibilities are likely to include furthering experimental reactor work, strengthening research partnerships and ensuring high standards of safety and regulatory compliance across IGCAR activities.

Colleagues note that Pillai’s background in both plant-level operations and process engineering equips him to manage the complex interface between research priorities and day-to-day operational demands. That combination is particularly important for institutions conducting advanced reactor development where demonstration projects must meet rigorous technical and safety milestones.

The appointment also comes at a time when international collaboration in nuclear science and technology continues to grow. While IGCAR’s work is primarily focused on India’s national programme, leadership with practical experience can support deeper scientific engagement and technical cooperation with partner institutions abroad.

Pillai succeeds C. G. Karhadkar, who retired after his tenure as director. The succession underscores a clear handover to a professional with long-standing experience in the country’s nuclear enterprise and signals steady governance for IGCAR’s research agenda.

With his move to Kalpakkam, Sreekumar G. Pillai now leads a team of researchers and engineers working on reactor research, fuel-cycle studies and related fields. Stakeholders within India’s nuclear establishment will be watching how his operational experience shapes the centre’s immediate priorities and its contribution to India’s longer-term nuclear research goals.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sreekumar G. Pillai named director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam.
  • He brings 35 years of experience at BARC, including senior roles in nuclear recycling and plutonium plant operations.
  • His appointment follows the retirement of former director C. G. Karhadkar and aims to maintain momentum in India’s fast reactor and fuel cycle programmes.
