Chief Minister M.K. Stalin received a warm welcome in Tiruchirappalli on Friday as he arrived to flag off the “Samathuva Nadaipayanam” organised by MDMK general secretary Vaiko. DMK cadres and local residents lined the route from Tiruchi airport to the Uzhavar Sandhai grounds at Thennur Anna Nagar, greeting the convoy and prompting slow movement through several city arteries.
Stalin visit Tiruchi draws large crowds
The convoy proceeded at a reduced speed to allow Mr Stalin to acknowledge supporters, who waved and cheered along the way. The display of popular support was notable, but it also coincided with significant disruption to routine traffic during the morning peak.
Motorists and commuters reported substantial delays near the meeting point at Uzhavar Sandhai. Traffic slowed considerably in Palakkarai, along the Thennur flyover, through Puthur and close to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH). Several roads experienced congestion that persisted for much of the morning.
R. Kamaraj, an autorickshaw driver from Tiruchi, said he was stranded for more than 45 minutes between Palakkarai and the Head Post Office area. “I could not get through for a long time. Many of us were stuck and missed appointments,” he said.
Commuters also reported limited availability of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Passengers described buses that were operating as overcrowded, and some relied on alternate private services where possible. The crowds and diversions compounded the usual morning rush, adding strain to an already busy stretch of the city.
However, a senior TNSTC official in Tiruchi told reporters that scheduled services were not disrupted. “Our buses were operated on time. Some private buses had deviated from their routes due to traffic diversions,” the official said, suggesting that private operators had altered their schedules in response to the event rather than the state service being withdrawn.
The event was held to flag off the Samathuva Nadaipayanam, a public programme led by MDMK general secretary Vaiko. Party leaders and supporters gathered at the Uzhavar Sandhai grounds for the formal launch, while the Chief Minister’s presence drew additional attention and attendance from supporters across the city.
Local authorities and police managed the procession and associated traffic diversions. Temporary restrictions were placed on vehicular movement close to the route to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth passage of the convoy. Authorities advised commuters to plan journeys accordingly during similar events and to allow extra time when travelling through central Tiruchi.
For residents dependent on public transport, the incident highlighted the challenges of balancing high-profile political engagements with urban mobility. City officials may consider co‑ordination measures with bus operators and clearer advisories to reduce inconvenience on days when large political gatherings are expected.
Despite the disruption to traffic, organisers and party workers described the reception as successful, emphasising strong local engagement with the political programme. The event closed with party leaders addressing the crowd at Uzhavar Sandhai and thanking attendees for their participation.
