Tam Dao Named World’s Top Mountain Town Again – Vietnam’s ‘Da Lat of the North’ Near Hanoi

Tam Dao, a compact mountain town roughly 75–80 km north of Hanoi, has once again won international attention after being named the World Travel Awards’ top mountain town for 2025. The distinction, the fourth in as many years, underlines the town’s growing reputation as an easy, high‑quality mountain getaway for domestic and international travellers.

Tam Dao tourism and what draws visitors

Accessible in about two hours by road from the capital, Tam Dao combines a cool climate all year, regular morning mist and a concentration of visitor services that suits short breaks. Weekend visitor numbers typically range from 20,000 to 25,000, while major holidays and periods of severe cold can push daily arrivals above 30,000. That steady demand has kept hotels, resorts and homestays at high occupancy through peak periods.

The natural setting is central to Tam Dao tourism. Vườn quốc gia Tam Đảo, the national park surrounding the town, is recognised as an ASEAN Heritage Park. Its protected forests help maintain the town’s temperate weather and the atmospheric mist that decorates mornings and evenings. Trails through the park lead to waterfalls such as Thác Bạc and to well maintained nature walks that accommodate casual visitors and more experienced hikers alike.

Architectural landmarks and elevated viewpoints add to the town’s appeal. The stone church in the town centre, a French colonial structure often shrouded in mist, is one of the most photographed sites. The central square and nearby lookout points are popular for early‑morning cloud viewing and sunset watching, activities that have become signature experiences for tourists.

Tam Dao’s accommodation mix has expanded to match demand. A range of homestays, boutique hotels and higher‑end resorts sits on the slopes above the town, giving visitors a choice between simple local hospitality and more comfortable retreats with panoramic views. Cafés and small restaurants cater to residents and guests, while evening markets and food stalls serve regional dishes such as grilled hill chicken, hotpots and locally grown su su.

From a tourism management perspective, Tam Dao offers a model of a mountain resort close to a major urban centre. Its success hinges on accessibility, consistent climate appeal and the combination of natural and built attractions. Continued recognition by global bodies like the World Travel Awards raises the town’s profile and supports local businesses that rely on steady visitor flows.

Local authorities and conservation groups face the typical challenges of popular destinations: managing visitor numbers at peak times, ensuring waste and infrastructure keep pace with growth, and protecting the ecological values of the national park. Successful management will be essential to preserve the qualities that make Tam Dao tourism attractive.

For travellers based in Hanoi or visiting northern Vietnam, Tam Dao remains an attractive option for a weekend escape or a short holiday. Its mix of cool weather, easy travel time and diverse visitor experiences explains why it has retained international accolades and continues to draw large numbers of visitors every year.

Key Takeaways:

  • Tam Dao tourism continues to grow after being named World Travel Awards’ top mountain town for the fourth consecutive year.
  • The town lies about 75–80 km from Hanoi, making it an accessible two‑hour trip for short breaks.
  • Vườn quốc gia Tam Đảo’s ASEAN heritage status supports its cool climate and misty mornings, key draws for visitors.
  • Weekend visitor numbers often reach 20,000–25,000, with peaks above 30,000 during holidays and cold snaps.
