The Tamil Nadu government has announced a state-wide “Thirukkural Week” to be held in January 2026, celebrating the classical Tamil text Thirukkural and its author Thiruvalluvar. The programme, released by the state’s Tamil development department, follows the inauguration of a Thiruvalluvar statue by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at Kanyakumari on 31 December 2024. Officials say the week-long observance aims to promote Tamil literary traditions across communities, colleges and government institutions.
Thirukkural Week Tamil Nadu brings events to every district
The schedule includes a broad mix of cultural and academic activities. Four districts — Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Theni and Cuddalore — will host Thirukkural dance-drama and music productions. All 38 districts will stage public-only painting and quotation-matching contests that invite community participation and encourage engagement with Kural couplets.
College students will take part in dedicated arts competitions in Coimbatore, Vellore, Thanjavur and Virudhunagar. Each of these districts will host a college-based event open to students from all higher education institutions within the district, featuring painting, short film editing and photography contests centred on Thirukkural themes.
In Madurai, Erode, Namakkal and Thiruvarur the government will convene Thirukkural discussion panels to explore the text’s ethical and civic teachings. These forums are expected to attract scholars, students and members of the public.
Chennai will host a major cultural highlight when composer James Vasanthan’s “Tamilosai” concert takes place at the Marina beach on Saturday 10 January 2026. The event will be organised in coordination with the Greater Chennai Corporation and is positioned as a flagship public celebration.
The government has also scheduled a conference for Kural teachers, to be held in Tiruppur on Wednesday 21 January 2026. The Tiruppur gathering will include participation from government officials, employees and schoolteachers at all levels and will feature a rapid-fire Kural quiz. Participants for the Tiruppur events will be selected through a preliminary Thirukkural exam to be held in every district on Friday 9 January 2026 at 2pm. The top 30 candidates from the preliminary assessment in each district will be invited to take part in the Tiruppur programme.
Authorities have provided syllabuses and rules for the Kural quiz and related competitions through designated code links in the official release. The department has asked district administrations and educational institutions to co-ordinate logistics and outreach to ensure broad participation.
Officials say the initiative seeks to renew public interest in Thirukkural by combining performance arts, visual arts and academic discussion, while offering a platform for students and community members to engage directly with Tamil classical heritage. With events organised across urban and rural districts, the week is designed to be inclusive and to highlight the continuing relevance of Thirukkural in civic life.
Preparations are now under way at district level and the department is urging schools, colleges and cultural organisations to register participants and circulate the competition guidelines ahead of the January schedule.
