Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited Surin province to review security arrangements along the Thailand-Cambodia border and offer New Year encouragement to troops stationed at the Phu Luang operational base in Kab Chueang district.

Accompanied by Acting Deputy Minister of Defence Lieutenant General Adulya Boonthamcharoen and a delegation of senior officials, the prime minister received detailed briefings from Governor Chamroen Wanpetch, Deputy Governor Praphas Srichanwiang and local military and security commanders. The visit came amid routine efforts by Bangkok to ensure stability along its eastern frontier and to reassure personnel tasked with border surveillance.

Thailand-Cambodia border security: inspection and morale support

During the inspection, Mr Anutin toured the Phu Luang base and reviewed the positions and logistical arrangements supporting border operations. Local commanders reported on patrol rotations, surveillance measures and coordination with provincial authorities. The delegation used the opportunity to assess needs for equipment and welfare to sustain operational readiness.

The prime minister combined the security review with a morale-boosting programme for troops serving through the year-end. He offered New Year greetings, delivered words of encouragement to servicemen and women, and distributed welfare items to frontline personnel. In a gesture reflecting Thailand’s close ties between state and religious institutions, he presented a Narai riding Garuda amulet, received from the highly respected monk Chao Khun Thongchai (Somdet Phra Maha Ratchamongkol Muni) of Wat Traimit, to a senior officer for safekeeping.

Mr Anutin also recorded the traditional “Katha Yung Thong” blessing and encouraged troops to recite it nine times as a source of morale and spiritual support. The ritual is commonly used in Thailand to bolster cohesion and confidence among personnel serving in isolated or demanding postings.

Officials emphasised that the visit was part of regular oversight rather than a response to any immediate crisis. The inspection reinforced existing efforts to prevent illicit activity across the border, maintain security for local communities and ensure swift responses to any incidents. Provincial authorities and security agencies said they would continue to brief national leaders on developments and any resource gaps.

While the visit did not involve Cambodian officials, it underscores Bangkok’s continuing commitment to secure and well-managed frontier zones. Regular inspections by senior ministers help align national resources with local operational requirements and demonstrate public support for forces on duty.

Analysts note that sustained government engagement at the local level can improve intelligence-sharing, logistics and civilian-military cooperation, reducing the likelihood of cross-border incidents. For the troops at Phu Luang, the prime minister’s presence and the symbolic gifts offered a visible sign of recognition ahead of the new year.

Provincial leaders said they would follow up on the prime minister’s observations and proposals, and ensure that welfare and equipment needs identified during the visit are addressed in short order.

Key Takeaways:

  • Prime Minister Anutin inspected frontline units in Surin to assess Thailand-Cambodia border security and receive operational briefings.
  • The visit included Acting Deputy Defence Minister Lt Gen Adulya Boonthamcharoen and senior provincial officials to reinforce troop morale ahead of the new year.
  • The prime minister presented welfare items and a religious token to soldiers and led a traditional blessing to boost spirits.
