Saravanan formally took charge yesterday as the new Deputy Inspector General (DIG) responsible for Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi districts, promising a concerted effort to maintain law and order across the region.

Tirunelveli DIG Saravanan security plan to strengthen law and order

At his first press conference after assuming office, Saravanan said his primary duty is to ensure peace and security in the four southern districts. With elections approaching, he stressed that police will take all necessary precautionary steps to ensure that polling takes place in a safe and calm manner without disruptions.

He outlined several immediate priorities. First, the police will work closely with the transport department to tackle a rise in road accidents. Joint, targeted operations will focus on reducing fatalities and improving traffic discipline through enforcement and awareness campaigns. Second, he pledged to speed up inquiries into registered cases so that final reports reach courts promptly. This, he said, will help ensure that perpetrators face timely legal consequences.

Saravanan was explicit about tackling communal tensions. Although incidents of caste clashes in the southern districts have fallen compared with the past, he said the force intends to eliminate such conflicts completely. Officers will conduct ongoing awareness programmes in government schools aimed at fostering equality among students and promoting social harmony.

The DIG warned that anyone using social media to spread rumours or incite caste or religious violence will face strict legal action without bias. He said the police would act decisively against those who foment discord, while also ensuring that responses respect legal procedures.

Addressing concerns about police conduct, Saravanan said complaints against officers and recommendations from the Human Rights Commission will be examined carefully. Appropriate disciplinary or corrective steps will be taken when investigations find wrongdoing, he added, underscoring a commitment to accountability.

He emphasised that the overall goal is to create a secure environment in which the public can live without fear. The new DIG called on community leaders, civic groups and residents to cooperate with the police and participate in outreach efforts to strengthen communal bonds.

Local officials welcomed Saravanan’s appointment and his stated priorities, noting that coordinated efforts between departments will be essential to reduce road casualties and maintain election security. Observers said early, transparent action on investigations and visible community engagement can help build trust in policing across the four districts.

In the coming weeks the DIG plans to meet district superintendents and frontline officers to finalise operational plans for election deployment, road safety drives and school awareness sessions. He also promised regular progress updates to the public, aiming to demonstrate measurable improvements in safety and social cohesion.

By combining rapid casework, inter-departmental coordination and community outreach, Saravanan seeks to ensure that Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi remain calm and secure as they approach a busy electoral period.

Key Takeaways:

  • Tirunelveli DIG Saravanan assumes charge for four southern districts and pledges to maintain peace and law and order.
  • The Tirunelveli DIG Saravanan security plan emphasises election safety, rapid investigations and joint road‑safety operations.
  • Police will run awareness programmes in government schools and take strict legal action against those spreading communal rumours on social media.
  • Human rights complaints will be reviewed and disciplinary steps taken where warranted to build a safe environment for all residents.
