Tourists Flock to Manali Ahead of New Year Hoping for Snowfall

The hill station of Manali in Himachal Pradesh has seen a sharp influx of visitors as the town prepares for New Year 2026, with thousands of vehicles arriving and hotels reporting full bookings. Tourists from Delhi, Chandigarh and other cities have converged on the region, turning Mall Road and Atal Chowk into bustling centres of activity.

Manali snowfall expectations and tourist rush

Areas such as Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley have reported heavy footfall as travellers hope for fresh snow during the final hours of the year. Many families are planning to spend New Year’s Eve outdoors, enjoying music and local festivities while keeping an eye on the weather. Children in particular are eager to experience snowfall, making winter weather the primary draw for this wave of visitors.

Speaking to reporters, Jatin Mehta, who travelled from Delhi, said he arrived early in the morning and was optimistic about the prospects of snow. “We came from Delhi and reached here early this morning, hoping that there would be snowfall. Our plan for the 31st is to stay here and dance to the DJ music,” he said. Another visitor, Geetu, described Manali as beautiful and said this trip felt special because the group hoped to see snow on New Year’s Eve.

Local hoteliers and shopkeepers have welcomed the surge in arrivals. Hotel bookings were reported as full days in advance of the holiday, and hospitality staff are preparing for a busy weekend. Vendors on Mall Road have extended operating hours and put out seasonal goods to meet demand. Local officials and residents have expressed cautious optimism that the increased tourist traffic will provide a meaningful boost to incomes during the holiday season.

Authorities have highlighted standard safety and traffic measures as the number of vehicles entering Manali rises. Tourists are advised to follow local guidance, respect parking regulations and prepare for cold conditions at higher altitudes. Those planning visits to Rohtang Pass are encouraged to check road conditions and permits, as weather can change rapidly in the mountains.

The arrival of large numbers of visitors also brings challenges. Public services, waste management and crowd control are under strain in popular spots, and local bodies are coordinating with tourism operators to manage the flow. Despite these pressures, many residents say the advantages outweigh the difficulties, noting that the winter season is vital for sustaining livelihoods in the hospitality and retail sectors.

As evening approaches on 31 December, Mall Road is expected to remain lively with families taking evening walks, dining at local eateries and attending public gatherings. Many visitors intend to combine celebrations with outdoor activities such as sledging and short treks in accessible areas. Whether the skies deliver the hoped-for Manali snowfall remains uncertain, but the town’s festive atmosphere and economic uplift are already evident.

Officials and residents alike are watching the weather forecasts closely while preparing for continued tourist interest through the New Year weekend. For now, Manali’s streets reflect a holiday revival, with travellers filling hotels and shops, and a community ready to welcome the season.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thousands of visitors have arrived in Manali ahead of New Year, with hotels reporting full bookings and heavy traffic to hill attractions.
  • Tourists are converging on Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley hoping for fresh snow, driving high footfall at major spots.
  • Local businesses and vendors expect a seasonal boost in income as Mall Road and Atal Chowk come alive for the holiday period.
  • Families and children are particularly eager for Manali snowfall, making winter tourism the focus of celebrations.
