Two women drowned in a canal near Aanahosuru village in Lingsugur taluk of Raichur district on Wednesday, police confirmed. The deceased have been named as Devamma Durugappa Pujari, 30, and Eramma Venkatesh, 40, both residents of Nanjaladinni village in neighbouring Maski taluk.
According to local authorities, the women were returning home after completing work in a farmland when they stopped at the canal to wash their hands and legs. Devamma slipped and fell into the water. In an attempt to help, Eramma also lost her footing and was pulled under.
Town police and emergency responders attended the scene. Officers recovered the bodies and have registered a case to establish the precise circumstances of the incident. Further inquiries are under way, police said.
Karnataka canal drowning
Incidents of accidental drowning in open irrigation channels and storage tanks are not uncommon in rural parts of India. Canals built for irrigation can have steep banks, sudden drop-offs and strong currents that make them hazardous, particularly for those working long hours in the fields and often wearing footwear unsuited to wet surfaces.
Local residents described the scene as a tragedy for both families and the wider village. Neighbours and fellow villagers gathered after learning of the accident. Community leaders called for greater awareness of the dangers posed by canals and for measures to improve safety around water bodies frequented by agricultural workers.
Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information to come forward to assist the investigation. Officials stressed that early reporting can help clarify events and provide closure for bereaved families.
Medical and emergency services in many rural districts face challenges such as limited rapid-response capacity and longer travel times to remote locations. Local health officials noted the importance of first-aid training and community preparedness to reduce the risk of fatalities in similar accidents.
The Raichur district administration did not immediately issue a statement, but district authorities routinely advise caution near canals during seasonal irrigation activity and while fields are being worked. Simple precautions, such as avoiding steep canal edges, using designated crossing points and supervising vulnerable individuals, can reduce the number of such tragedies.
The families of the deceased are being supported by neighbours and local leaders as arrangements are made. Police continue to investigate and said they would provide updates as enquiries progress.
