UAE Launches Family Year to Strengthen Social Cohesion in 2026

The United Arab Emirates has launched the “Year of the Family” for 2026, a nationwide initiative designed to strengthen family bonds and enshrine long-term social sustainability. Framed as a strategic priority of the federal government, the campaign intends to make the family the central focus of public policy and community action as the nation prepares for the coming decade.

UAE Family Year 2026

Government leaders have emphasised that the family is the cornerstone of society. Drawing on the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s principle that the family underpins a strong community, the President, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has called on all sectors from health and education to housing, the economy and media to play an active role in supporting the initiative.

The campaign is anchored in the National Agenda for UAE Family Growth 2031, which provides the policy framework and targets for enhancing family well-being. Officials say the Year of the Family will build on earlier national priorities and accelerate measures that support family formation, stability and resilience. A national taskforce of more than 20 federal and local entities will coordinate delivery and ensure institutional governance to preserve the initiative’s long-term impact.

Work under the Year of the Family is organised around three main tracks. The first track focuses on reviewing and adjusting policies and programmes that affect family life, whether directly or indirectly. The second seeks to understand and influence behavioural and social drivers through field interviews and community engagement with Emirati families across the country. The third examines current reproductive health services and initiatives to identify gaps and improve access and outcomes.

These tracks align with five national family policy goals adopted in 2018: preparing families for the challenges of married life, promoting stability and cohesion, creating a supportive and healthy environment to manage social pressures, enhancing families’ capacities to raise responsible future generations, and achieving family happiness through solidarity and mutual support.

Officials stress the initiative is not a short-term campaign but a sustained effort to institutionalise family-centred thinking across government programmes. By embedding family priorities within sectoral planning, the state aims to maintain positive returns from past social initiatives and to safeguard cultural values across generations.

Community engagement will be a central element. The behavioural track will collect insights directly from families in different emirates to ensure policies respond to lived realities. Health authorities will work to strengthen reproductive health services, while education and social services will coordinate to provide preventive and supportive measures for families facing economic or social pressures.

Analysts say that the Year of the Family reflects a broader strategy to consolidate social cohesion as a foundation for sustainable development. By mobilising multiple ministries and agencies and setting clear programmatic tracks, the UAE seeks measurable improvements in family well-being and durable social stability that will support continued economic and civic progress.

As 2026 begins, the UAE is positioning family-centred policy at the heart of its national agenda, aiming to protect cultural identity, promote social solidarity and foster future generations that are well-equipped to contribute to the country’s long-term prosperity.

Key Takeaways:

  • UAE Family Year 2026 launches to reinforce family as the foundation of national stability and future growth.
  • The initiative builds on the National Agenda for UAE Family Growth 2031 and involves over 20 federal and local agencies.
  • Three main tracks will be pursued: policies and programmes, behavioural interventions, and reproductive health.
  • The initiative aims to nurture resilient families, promote social values and support generational continuity.
