Fifty Indian Police Service officers were promoted in Uttar Pradesh on 1 January 2026, setting in motion a major reshuffle of senior leadership across the state. The promotions, which span multiple batches, have opened posts at range, commissionerate and district levels and are expected to lead to an extensive transfer list once the chief minister signs off on new postings.
Uttar Pradesh police promotions drive transfers across ranges
The largest group affected are officers from the 2013 batch, with 28 promoted to the selection grade and designated as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). Additionally, three officers from the 2001 batch were elevated from Inspector General (IG) to Additional Director General (ADG). Six officers from the 2008 batch were promoted from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to IG, while 13 officers from the 2012 batch advanced from SP to DIG.
Officials in the police headquarters said the promotions will create several immediate vacancies in operationally sensitive posts. Those elevated from IG to ADG currently hold key field assignments: Praveen Kumar serves as IG of the Ayodhya Range, Tarun Baba holds IG Security while also overseeing the Lucknow Range, and Ashutosh Kumar functions as Joint Police Commissioner in the Kanpur commissionerate. Their promotions leave the Ayodhya and Lucknow ranges and the Kanpur commissionerate with senior positions to fill.
Among the six 2008-batch officers promoted to IG are Kiran S, Anand Kulkarni, N Kulanchi, Amit Verma, Rajiv Malhotra and Akhilesh Nigam. N Kulanchi and Amit Verma are currently deployed as Joint Commissioners in the Prayagraj and Lucknow commissionerates respectively. Kiran S, recently returned from central deputation and attached to the DGP headquarters, is also expected to receive an IG posting.
The 13 officers advanced to DIG include field commanders and current district chiefs: Vijay Dhul (112), STF SSP Sushil Ghule, Saharanpur SSP Ashish Tiwari, Meerut SSP Vipin Tada, Pilibhit SSP Abhishek Yadav, Lakhimpur Kheri SP Sankalp Sharma and Mirzapur SP Soman Verma. Also among them are officials serving in Noida and Gorakhpur commissionerates and officers attached to DGP headquarters and central units.
Police sources say the promotions demand a careful reallocation of responsibilities to ensure continuity of law and order and preserve operational momentum. A senior official in the secretariat noted that planning for transfers is under way and that decisions will take account of ongoing investigations, local security requirements and the need to maintain leadership stability in sensitive districts.
Once the chief minister approves the proposed postings, the police headquarters will issue an official transfer list. Observers expect a broad reshuffle that could affect ADG, IG, DIG and SSP positions across multiple ranges and commissionerates. The administration will aim to balance experience, local knowledge and service seniority when finalising assignments.
For citizens and stakeholders, the changes signal a renewed emphasis on administrative renewal at the outset of the year. The new appointments are likely to influence policing priorities and coordination between district units and state headquarters as the newly promoted officers assume their responsibilities in the coming weeks.
