The first overseas edition of the Verbier Festival opens in Shenzhen at the end of January, bringing a high-profile winter line-up to the Greater Bay Area and offering a fresh cultural draw for audiences across southern China. The 10-day series of concerts and education events runs from 30 January to 8 February at the Shenzhen Concert Hall and the Longgang International Arts Centre.

Verbier Festival Shenzhen arrives in the Greater Bay Area

The festival’s inaugural programme includes world-class soloists and ensembles. Legendary pianist Martha Argerich makes a return to China with a varied set of performances, among them Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor with cellist Gautier Capuçon. Argerich also appears in a four-hand recital with Mikhail Pletnev and in a chamber trio alongside Mischa Maisky and Janine Jansen. Other headline names include Lang Lang, Joshua Bell, Minsoo Sohn, Bruce Liu and the Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, who will perform a solo recital accompanied by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.

Gabor Takács-Nagy conducts the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in several programmes, while the festival’s education mandate is reflected in a range of masterclasses and outreach events designed for students and young professionals. Ticket prices range from 80 yuan to 1,680 yuan, providing access for a broad public, and full details are available via the festival’s official website.

Beyond the Verbier Festival, the Greater Bay Area will host an assortment of music and cultural highlights in January. K-rock veterans CNBlue begin the first stop of their 2026 overseas tour at The Londoner Arena in Macau on 31 January. The trio will perform material from their new album 3logy, offering an early opportunity for fans who cannot wait for the band’s Hong Kong dates.

Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mei Semones continues her Winter 2026 tour with two stops in the region. Her gig at Guangzhou’s Omni Space on 17 January precedes a show at Shenzhen’s Mao Livehouse on 18 January. Semones’s debut album, released in 2025, has attracted international attention and helped her secure festival and club dates worldwide.

Musical theatre also features prominently. The original English production of Phantom of the Opera will be staged at the Guangzhou Opera House from 20 January to 8 February with Chinese surtitles. The run includes evening and matinee performances, bringing a long-running West End and Broadway classic to Zaha Hadid’s celebrated venue.

Architecture and design are represented by Zaha Hadid Architects at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning in Shenzhen. The exhibition explores the studio’s methods and projects in China, including its embrace of AI and virtual reality in design. The show runs until 10 April and offers free entry, encouraging public engagement with contemporary architecture. Visitors may also wish to see the studio’s recently completed Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum.

Taken together, the January calendar points to a strong start for cultural programming in the Greater Bay Area in 2026. For Hong Kong classical music patrons and visitors from farther afield, the Verbier Festival Shenzhen is likely to become a regular destination, while the region’s varied concerts and exhibitions promise broader tourism and cultural exchange benefits.

Key Takeaways:

  • Verbier Festival Shenzhen launches in Shenzhen from 30 January to 8 February, featuring Martha Argerich and other international soloists.
  • The festival includes education programmes and masterclasses, strengthening cultural exchange in the Greater Bay Area.
  • Other January highlights across the region include CNBlue in Macau, Mei Semones in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Phantom of the Opera in Guangzhou and a Zaha Hadid exhibition in Shenzhen.
