Zoho to Add Payments to Arattai in India

Zoho Corporation has confirmed plans to integrate a payments capability into its homegrown messaging app Arattai, the company’s founder Sridhar Vembu said in response to a user suggestion on X. The brief exchange — “We are working on it. We will integrate it with Arattai!” — signals a clear intent to broaden the app’s utility beyond messaging and media sharing.

Arattai payments integration and what to expect

Vembu’s reply did not include a rollout date or technical specifics, leaving open whether the feature will support India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or rely on a separate payments network. UPI dominates mobile payments in India and any meaningful consumer adoption will likely require seamless interoperability with existing systems.

Launched in January 2021 amid privacy debates surrounding other global platforms, Arattai has been marketed as an Indian alternative for private communication. The app already supports text and voice messaging, voice and video calls, photo and document sharing, stories, groups and channels, and multi-device access across five devices. Adding payments would transform Arattai into a multipurpose platform capable of handling everyday financial transactions alongside communication.

Industry observers say integrating payments into a messaging app is a natural progression for platforms seeking greater user engagement. For Zoho, a company that serves more than 130 million users worldwide and offers more than 55 business applications, payments could open new use cases for small businesses and enterprise customers that already rely on Zoho’s suite of products.

Security and privacy considerations will be critical. Zoho has recently announced plans for a major security upgrade for Arattai, and any payment feature will need robust safeguards against fraud and data breaches. How Zoho balances convenience, regulatory compliance and user privacy will determine whether Arattai can compete with established players.

For Indian consumers and regulators, a homegrown payments-enabled messaging app may be attractive because of local data safeguards and compliance with domestic rules. Nevertheless, the payments sector in India is highly competitive and well integrated into UPI, which benefits from deep merchant acceptance and network effects. To succeed, Arattai’s payments capability would have to offer either compelling new features or smooth interoperability with existing networks.

Zoho’s position as a Chennai-headquartered technology group gives it several advantages. The company’s enterprise footprint and client base — which includes Amazon, Netflix and Deloitte — could help drive initial adoption among business users. At the same time, consumer uptake will depend on simple onboarding and clear incentives for users to shift payment flows to a new channel.

Vembu’s public confirmation has already generated interest among developers and analysts who follow India’s technology sector. While details are scarce, the move aligns with a broader trend of converging services in the digital economy, where messaging platforms increasingly host payments, commerce and services.

For now, stakeholders will be watching for follow-up announcements from Zoho about technical architecture, partner banks or payment rails, and a timetable for release. If executed effectively, Arattai payments integration could strengthen the app’s value proposition and offer an alternative model for combining communication and financial services in India.

Zoho Corporation, founded in 1996 by Sridhar Vembu and Tony Thomas, continues to expand its product portfolio from its Chennai base, serving customers in more than 150 countries. Any successful addition of payments to Arattai would mark another step in the company’s push to broaden its consumer-facing offerings alongside its established enterprise applications.

Key Takeaways:

  • Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu confirms the company is working on Arattai payments integration, signalling an expansion beyond messaging.
  • The announcement gives no timeline or technical details, leaving questions over UPI support and network interoperability.
  • Arattai’s growth and planned security upgrades position it as a homegrown alternative amid concerns over data privacy.
